Monotype Composition Caster
Description
Part of a two-machine hot-metal casting system with the Monotype Keyboard. The caster would select the requested die case (type), and as the machine read the tape by blowing air through the perforated holes created by the Monotype Keyboard, the individual type letters were produced. The Monotype system was invented in the late 1890s by Tolbert Lanston (1844–1913). Each of the two machines, the keyboard and the caster, was operated by a different person.
