Monotype Composition Caster
The caster would select the requested die case (type), and as the machine read the tape, the individual type letters were produced. If mistakes were made the caster would simply reove the misplaced type and replace it from a separate supply. This Monotype Caster and Keyboard were donated to NPM by the master printer and typesetter Conrad Devlin (1935–2014). Devlin operated a typesetting business Typeset Ltd., based in Drumcondra, north Dublin, where he typeset for publications for Aer Lingus, Bank of Ireland and Bord Fáilte, as well as numerous books for the Irish language publishing house, An Gúm. The Monotype system was invented in the late 1890s by Tolbert Lanston (1844–1913). It consists of two machines, a keyboard and a caster, each of which was operated by a different person.
