Japanese Woodblock Printmaking

Japanese woodblock printmaking is an ancient technique that dates back to the 8th century.
It is completely hand produced and water based, requires no printing press and the
of specialised equipment, thus providing an environmentally friendly and easily transportable process.
This workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some previous experience who would like to
refresh their knowledge and improve their basic skills. The course will begin with a PowerPoint
presentation entitled An introduction to Japan and the ancient art of woodblock printmaking; followed
by practical carving and printing demonstrations and guidance for the production of up to 15 four colour
prints, size: 17 x 25cm. All traditional tools and materials are provided and students are asked to bring
visual ideas in the form of drawings, photographs etc

Intermediate Japanese Woodblock Printmaking

This intermediate course is suitable for anyone who has completed a beginners’ course in Japanese woodblock
printmaking. The maintenance of traditional tools and carving and printing effects including bokashi
(colour gradation) will be covered in depth. The course will begin with a PowerPoint presentation
entitled Special effects in Japanese woodblock printmaking; followed by practical carving and printing
demonstrations and guidance for the production of up to 15 three colour prints, size: 17 x 25cm.
All traditional tools and materials are provided and students are asked to bring visual ideas in the
form of drawings, photographs etc.
